Just replaced the battery on my 96. I Assume it is the orginal, cranks were getting slower and slower and I had 2 no starts. Watered the battery and charged it, it would crank and start the bike but the voltage dropped to 7.89 volts during the first part of the cranking cycle. Also OCV (open circuit Voltage was 12.1-indicates abad cell, should be 12.6 on a good battery) Bought a new dry (hadn't sat in the shelf for yeras full of acid and sulfating) battery from a Standard Battery Co. dealer for $45. + tax. while the seat was still off checked the numbers again. Cranking was 9.8 on a recently filled and charged for 1 hr battery and charging voltage was 14.0 volts. With the seat off and the tool cover off you can access the battery terminals and take readings to help diagnose and verify the charging system. Starts great now and I think the headlight is steadier and somewhat brighter.
